Sjors Sportief is a municipal initiative to encourage young people to play sports. In a low-threshold way, children and parents can get to know local sports. Every year, all primary schools distribute the well-known Sjors Sportief booklets containing participating sports, including Aikido!
Primary schools such as De Startbaan, but also Salto Internationaal in Eindhoven, already know Aikido school Ando. Moreover, primary school De Slingertouw is right opposite the sports hall in Meerrijk, where Ando has its dojo. Every year, our Aikido teachers stand ready to take in this group of children and introduce them to this beautiful self-defence sport. For years, Ando's Aikido programme has brought big smiles to faces. In these basic Aikido classes important aspects such as respect, etiquette, roles but also resilience from calmness. Whereas other self-defence sports are often practised by boys, we see that girls also enjoy our training sessions; after all, they don't have to not strong ahead.
Where Aikido differs from other martial arts is that it is based on the principle of staying with yourself and not being challenged. At Ando, you learn to stand firmer in your shoes. You will be resilient without having to learn how to fight. Because Aikido is not a competitive sport, there is no performance drive and the focus is more on intrinsic motivation. This promotes positive development of both physical and mental skills, helping you learn to deal with conflict in a constructive way.
